17-year-old JCC teen dies in fatal car crash


At 8:11 p.m., on Sunday, Jan. 26, James City County Police responded to a head-on car crash in the 3600 block of News Road. Preliminary investigation revealed that a 2008 VW Jetta was being driven by a 17-year-old JCC teen traveling west on News road toward Centerville Road when for some unknown reason the vehicle drifted off the roadway onto to the right shoulder. The driver then over-corrected and lost control of the vehicle causing it to swerve back onto the roadway and across the center line, striking a 2007 Toyota Rav4 head-on. The driver of the VW was not wearing his seatbelt was ejected from the vehicle.


The driver of the VW, identified as “Case” Hendrik Kees Van Leliveld, 17 of JCC was flown by helicopter to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital where he died from his injuries. The driver of the Toyota, a 39-year-old JCC woman was transported by ambulance to Riverside Regional Hospital in Newport News where she was admitted with non-life threatening injuries. She was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash.


Speed and alcohol were not a factor in the crash. The road was closed for four hours while the investigation was being conducted. The crash remains under investigation.
