County cooling center open, cooling assistance applications available
High temperatures and humidity are expected in the area this week. Need a place to cool off? Citizens and visitors can head to James City County Recreation Center, 5301 Longhill Rd. The Center is open Monday-Thursday, 6 a.m.-9 p.m., Friday, 6 a.m.-8 p.m., Saturday, 8 a.m.-6 p.m., and Sunday, 1-6 p.m. Except for service animals, please no pets. In addition, James City County's Department of Social Services is now accepting cooling assistance applications. The program provides purchase or repair of cooling equipment and/or payment for electricity to operate cooling equipment. To be eligible, a household must contain at least one vulnerable individual who is age 60 or over, disabled or under age 6. Assistance is based on the availability of funds and the deadline to apply is Aug. 15. Residents can apply thru commonhelp.virginia.gov or complete a paper application at James City County Department of Social Services, 5249 Olde Towne Rd., Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. For more information, call 757-259-3100.
