Peterson named Human Resource Director
Acting County Administrator, Doug Powell, has announced James A. “Pete” Peterson II as James City County’s new Human Resource (HR) Director effective April 1, 2014. Peterson has been the Assistant Human Resource Director since 2007 and filled the position as Acting HR Director left vacant by Carol Luckam who retired in February.
Peterson brings a wealth of HR experience including the development and administration of personnel policies and procedures, the County Compensation Plan, staff recruitment and employment programs plus employee relations, disciplinary actions, complaints and grievances. As the County’s HR Director he will lead a staff of seven who are responsible for day-to-day employee relations for over 750 full and part-time staff, personnel policies and procedures plus applicable laws and regulations. “County citizens deserve and benefit from a quality staff. So the choice for HR Director was a critical decision.” says Powell. “Pete’s knowledge of HR best management practices, experience with a variety of personnel issues and ability to gather and analyze complicated data made that decision easy.”
Peterson came to James City County after serving as Director of Human Resource for Hampton University for three years. He is certified as a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR), earned his Master of Business Administration in 2004 and an undergraduate degree in Business Management in 1997. “I’m fortunate to be able to continue the good work of our Human Resource Department. James City County is a quality community due in part to the commitment of our talented staff. People represent our most valuable resource and I look forward to supporting them during the challenging times ahead,” says Peterson.
