November 2015

Friday, Nov. 20: Iceburg Skate Rink Opens, 5-9 p.m. at Mid County Park (next to Kidsburg). Saturday and Sunday hours are noon-9 p.m. Grab the whole family and join Glacier the Polar Bear at the coolest place in town. The Iceburg Skate Rink is the peninsula’s only synthetic ice rink. Synthetic ice rinks are composed of plastic panels that fit together to create a surface perfect for ice skating. Skating on synthetic ice is similar to skating on real ice, but no ice or water is required. Skaters are issued real ice skates or you can bring your own. Daily admission fees apply; season passes available. Host your next event at Iceburg, call 757-259-5360 for details! Season ends January 31.


December 2015

Tuesday, Dec. 8: Santa Calling, Free!, 5:45-8 p.m. from the North Pole! JCC Parks and Recreation is sponsoring ‘Phone Calls from Santa’ for children ages 9 and younger living in James City County and Williamsburg. Arrangements have been made with the North Pole for Santa and/or Mrs. Claus to personally call each child who returns their completed form (English) (Spanish) by Tuesday, Dec. 1. Santa/Mrs. Claus will attempt to call children between 5:45-8 p.m.; however, specific call times cannot be guaranteed due to Santa and Mrs. Claus’ holiday schedule. Registration forms available beginning Nov. 2 at the Recreation Centers, Satellite Services in Toano, Freedom Park Interpretive Center, Chickahominy Riverfront Park and online at

Saturday, Dec. 12: Breakfast with Santa, 9-11 a.m. at the James City County Recreation Center. You and your family are invited to attend our annual “Breakfast with Santa” and enjoy a pancake breakfast buffet and a morning of “holly-day” cheer with Santa and Mrs. Claus. Photo opportunities available. Max 100 people. $12/person; ages 2 years and younger free! Register by Dec. 4; please register everyone who is attending to ensure a seat. January 2016

Saturday, Jan. 9: Group Fitness Open House, Free!, 9-11 a.m. at the James City County Recreation Center. Now is the time! It’s a New Year, so start a new routine to get LEAN in 2016! Aquatic and land instructors will be available to discuss their classes, formats and typical modifications with you in a personal setting. Participate in mini classes throughout the morning. Sentara nurses will be available to administer health screenings. No registration required. All ages welcome. For more details, call 757-259-4176.

Wednesday, Jan. 20: New Year, New You Top Tips for Healthy Eating in 2016, 5:30-6:30 p.m. at the James City County Recreation Center. Pre-registration required by Jan. 13. Are you tired of losing the same 10 pounds over and over? Do you need a new approach to weight control? Come hear some tips you can use to help you lose weight the healthy way. All ages welcome. Presenter: Megan R. Cordova, RDN, CDE, Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and Certified Diabetes Educator with Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center’s Diabetes and Nutrition Outpatient Center. 301643


Friday, Jan. 22: Parent’s Night Out for youth in grades K-8, 6:30-10 p.m. at Stonehouse Elementary School. Parents – take the night off and relax! Drop off your children and let them have a blast with themed activities. We’ll even provide dinner! Jan. 22 is Fire & Police Appreciation Night! Meet, greet and play great games with the brave men and women who put their lives on the line every day to keep our community safe! Raffles, prizes and fun times!  $25/child; 20 for JC/W residents plus a $5 discount for 2nd and subsequent children in the same household. Youth (grades K-5) 770100-B; Teens (grades 6-8) 604100-B.


February 2016

Sunday, Feb. 7: Black Settlement Presentation & Book Signing, Free!, 3-4 p.m. at Freedom Park. Join Lafayette Jones Jr., a descendent of those that lived on the Free Black Settlement at Freedom Park, for a presentation and book signing. Come experience 18th century life more than 60 years before the Emancipation Proclamation. All ages welcome.

Saturday, Feb. 27: Destination Recreation Expo, Free!, 9 a.m.-noon at the James City County Recreation Center. Your one-stop-shop for everything Parks and Recreation has to offer! Discover your parks/facilities, learn about various classes/programs offered throughout the year and be one of the first to register for the upcoming summer camps! Informational booths, interactive demonstrations and hands on activities are just a few great features of this event. We’ll keep your children engaged while you gather information about summer camp opportunities, sports, outdoor, aquatic programs, special events, parks and facilities, REC Connect, inclusion/therapeutic programs and activities offered through our affiliate organizations. All ages welcome. Raffles and discounts for camps, classes and facilities given on day of event!


March 2016

Saturday, March 26: Easter Egg Extravaganza, Free! For ages walking to 7 years. Wanner Stadium/Warhill Sports Complex (enter the Stadium from the Thomas Nelson Community College entrance) and the Abram Frink Jr. Community Center. With over 10,000 eggs for the hunts, these events are ones to see! Also enjoy face painting, refreshments for purchase and more! Bring your Easter basket and camera! Co-sponsor: Williamsburg Parks and Recreation. Weather permitting. Hunts are divided by age. Wanner Stadium/9:30-11:30 a.m.: walking-2 years, 10 a.m.; 3 years, 10:10 a.m.; 4 years, 10:20 a.m.; 5 years, 10:30 a.m.; 6 years, 10:40 a.m.; and 7 years, 10:50 a.m.  Frink Community Center/1-2 p.m.: walking-7 years, 1:30 p.m.
