Saturday, April 5: Black Settlement Presentation & Book Signing, 3-4 p.m. at Freedom Park. Join Lafayette Jones Jr., a descendent of those that lived on the Free Black Settlement at Freedom Park, for a presentation and book signing. Come experience 18th century life more than 60 years before the Emancipation Proclamation. All ages welcomed!

 

Saturday, April 19: Easter Egg Extravaganza at Wanner Stadium at the Warhill
Sports Complex and Abram Frink Jr. Community Center (formerly James River).
Walking to 7 years. Wanner Stadium, 9:30-11:30 a.m.: walking-2 years, 10 a.m.,
3 years, 10:15 a.m., 4 years, 10:30 a.m., 5 years, 10:45 a.m., 6 years, 11 a.m., 7 years, 11:15 a.m. Abram Frink Jr. Community Center, 1-2 p.m.: walking-7 years, 1:30 p.m. With over 10,000 eggs for the hunts, these events are ones to see! Also enjoy face painting, refreshments for purchase and more! Bring your Easter basket and camera! Co-sponsor is Williamsburg Parks and Recreation. Friday, May 2: Summer Camp Fair 2014, 4-8 p.m. and Saturday, May 3, 9 a.m.-noon at the James City County Recreation Center. Free! Still need to sign-up the kids for summer camp? Looking for something NEW this year? Attend the Summer Camp Fair to learn about great local camps and register your kids at the same time! Camps include day (full-time and part-time) and overnight camps; sports, adventure, scouting; dance, music, arts & theater; academics – science, foreign language, history; vacation bible schools; special needs and more! Thursday, May 8: National Hershey Track & Field Program (boys and girls ages 9-14), 5 p.m. at Lafayette High School. Events include the 50m, 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1600m, standing long jump, softball throw and relays. Top finishers qualify to participate in the Eastern District Meet in June and winners advance on to the State meet in July. Registration forms available in April and can be picked up at the Centers, Freedom Park, Satellite Services in Toano or downloaded from jamescitycountyva.gov/recreation. For more information, visit

Saturday, May 10: Singletrack Maniac 50K for ages 18+, 6 a.m.-4 p.m. at Freedom Park. $75/participant. Experience Freedom Park in a whole new way! The generous 10-hour time limit (19-minute mile pace) for the 31-mile Ultra race is great for beginners, but the single-track trails are technical and challenging with constant roots and elevation changes. If you’re looking to surpass the marathon and want to stay local, this is the first event of its kind in the area. No onsite registration. For information, call 757-259-4176 or visit maniac50k.com. Saturday, May 17: Family Fun Fest, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. at Chickahominy Riverfront Park. Admission: $5/car (cash or check only). Enjoy petting animals, hands-on activities, inflatable rides, family entertainment with music and contests too! ‘Touch-a-Truck’ is back for all ages! Stop by the ‘Good for You Zone’ and see why being healthy can lead to loads of fun. Oh, and be sure to participate in the Fun Run! Grab some lunch provided by our food vendors and visit all of our local craft and business vendors! Offered in partnership with SWRMC and Colonial Roadrunners. Friday, May 23: Movies under the Stars, 8:30-10:30 p.m. at Chickahominy Riverfront Park. Free! Enjoy some of the biggest family movies of 2012 and 2013, all under the stars! Bring lawn chairs, blankets and snacks. All ages welcome! Children 12 and younger must be accompanied by an adult. Scheduled: Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2. Movies subject to change. June 2014


Saturday, June 7: Tails on the Trails, 9 a.m.-noon at Freedom Park. $20/early registration fee; $30/regular registration fee. Ready for a summer-long trail adventure with your dog? Join the Heritage Humane Society for this kick-off event! Early bird registration is April 18-May 23. Fee increases to $30 May 24! Two new trails were added this year for a total of eight adventures with your dog through the summer. Participants also receive FREE admission to Drool in the Pool on Sept. 6. Registration includes a Tails on the Trail T-shirt, a bandana for your dog and an itinerary outlining all eight self-guided trail adventures. Saturday, June 7: Skate Jam, 10 a.m. at the Skate Park (adjacent to the James City County Recreation Center). $5/participant. Skateboards, bikes, food, live local music and of course, prizes make this skateboarding and BMX competition one not to miss! Participants divided into one of three categories – beginner, intermediate or advanced – and will be judged on style, flow and difficulty of run. June 20 – July 18: Student Art Show & Exhibit at the Williamsburg Library, 515 Scotland Street. Free! Exhibit available during library operating hours. Anne Kushnick’s oil painting and pastel students will display their talents in this annual exhibit. View many unique pieces with some available for purchase. *Libraries closed July 4.

 

Thursday, June 26: Spencer’s Ordinary Wreath Ceremony, 10 a.m. at Freedom Park.

The Williamsburg Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution will conduct a memorial service on June 26 in honor of the valiant Americans who gave their lives in the Battle of Spencer’s Ordinary on that date in 1781. A series of skirmishes occurred in the woods and meadows of Freedom Park between units of Lord Cornwallis and those of the French general, Marquis de Lafayette.

Saturday, July 12: Park to Park Bicycle Tour at Chickahominy Riverfront Park. Preregistration Deadline: June 30. Choose from a self-paced family ride, 15 miles, 30 miles or the NEW Metric Century ride (62 miles)! This new ride includes visits to Mid County Park (featuring the Powhatan Creek Trail), Freedom Park, Little Creek Reservoir and Upper County Park. Cool off after your ride with a dip in the pool at CRP. Fee includes refreshments, pool admittance, maps, support vehicles to help out tired riders and lunch! Preregistration forms available beginning May 1 at local bike shops, at the Centers, FP Interpretive Center, Satellite Services Office or online. Offered in partnership with Williamsburg Area Bicyclists.

 

Metric Century! 62-mile Ride: 7:30 a.m.-2 p.m., $15/person – preregister by June 30; $20/person after June 30/onsite.

 

30-mile Ride: 8 a.m.-2 p.m., $10/person – preregister by June 30; $15/person after June 30/onsite.

Saturday, August 30: Freedom Stories & More, noon-5 p.m. at Freedom Park.
Join Williamsburg native Dylan Pritchett, best known as ‘The Storyteller’ along with other Virginia Black Storytellers (VirBS) as they share with you Freedom Stories at Freedom Park! The Free Black Settlement area is the backdrop for this special event. Also featured are unique crafts for kids, music and food available for purchase.

Saturday, September 6: Drool in the Pool, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at Chickahominy Riverfront Park. $10/dog. Let your dog make a splash at Drool in the Pool. Pool passes for your dog will be available for purchase online beginning August 1. This popular dog swim day is eagerly anticipated each year and is great fun for you and your dog. Music provided by Philip Newbery of WMBG radio. All proceeds benefit the animals of Heritage Humane Society. For more information, visit the Heritage Humane Society. Come enjoy quality family time with various sights and activities at our annual Harvest Festival! Arts and crafts, food, games, inflatables and much, much more! Our featured activity, Scarecrow Stuffing, will be back again! Make the biggest, the best, and maybe the only scarecrow in your neighborhood! First come, first served while supplies last.
