Business Personal Property
If you do not have a Business Personal Property (BPP) reporting form:
If your business IS already registered with James City County, send the following in writing to
the address below:
a. Business name and trade name, if one is used.
b. Account number (if known).
c. A complete, detailed list of all personal property used in your business. Include year of
acquisition and original cost of each item, including any associated freight, installation and finance costs. Include a depreciation schedule
and/or Federal Form 4562 if your business files these forms.
d. Indicate which items on the above list were acquired in 2013.
e. Indicate which items on the above list were disposed in 2013.
f. Owner’s or officer’s signature and date.
If your business is NOT registered yet with James City County, send all of the above PLUS a completed and signed Business License Application.
- If you did not acquire or dispose of any items in 2013, you must state this in writing.
- Original ink signatures only – no photocopies.
- Do not include payment. You will be assessed and billed for business personal property in July and November, payable in August and December.

What is Business Personal Property? ALL equipment, furniture, fixtures, books, appliances, tools, office equipment, cash registers, and any other item used in the pursuit of your business.
Business Personal Property Rate - $4.00/$100 value - Personal property, other than motor vehicles, used in a trade or business is subject to local taxation as Business Personal Property. Returns are due no later than May 1 for property in use as of January 1 of a tax year. Business Personal Property is valued at 25 percent of original cost of each item, including any associated freight, installation and finance costs.
If you have Business Personal Property, you must file with the Commissioner of the Revenue's Office by May 1 of every year. Business Personal Property is assessed by that office. Any questions about these assessments should be forwarded to the Commissioner of the Revenue's office at 757-253-6695. The due dates are August 5 and December 5.
