What are your mailing and physical addresses, and your hours of operation?
Our mailing address is P.O. Box 8701, Williamsburg ,VA 23187-8701.
Both of our locations, 101-B Mounts Bay Road, Williamsburg VA 23185, and 3127 Forge Road, Toano, VA 23168 are open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. through 5 p.m.
When are taxes due? Personal property taxes and real estate taxes are both due on June 5th and December 5th each year. We also send out supplemental bills for property that moves into the County outside our normal billing cycle as well as real estate improvements.
How can I pay? We accept cash, check, or credit card. Payments can be made at either office or over the phone during business hours, or online anytime. Please see our Payment Options page for more information.
Do you accept postmark for tax payments? Payments postmarked on or before the due date are on-time. We also have a drop boxes located in the front of our building and at the Satellite office that are cleared at 8 a.m. each day.
How can I tell if you received my Epayment? If your Epayment with your debit or credit card goes through correctly, it will immediately give you a 10-digit confirmation number. Please print this for your records. Epayments can be made up until MIDNIGHT the day taxes are due.
Why is my payment being mailed to Baltimore? The Treasurer’s Office is now using a Lock Box program through the County’s bank to assist with timely payment processing.
Why has the County not cashed my check? The Treasurer’s Office experiences both high payment volume and high call volume during peak tax season. Wait times are longest during the June 5th and December 5th tax seasons.
What are the tax rates? Real estate is assessed at 84 cents per $ 100.00 of value. Personal property is assessed at $4.00 per $100.00 of value. Personal property tax relief accounts for 50% of that tax. For business taxes, please contact the Commissioner of the Revenue.
What is a fiscal year? The County is on a fiscal year that starts July 1st. The time period of July 1st to December 31st is considered the first half of the fiscal year. The time period of January 1st to June 30th is considered the second half.
Can I access my account online? The County does not have online account access at this time.
Are real estate tax records available online? There is no online real estate record access. This information can either be accessed at the Clerk of the Court in the James City County-Williamsburg Courthouse or over the phone with our office.
Can I make a payment arrangement? Payment plans can be set up with our on-staff delinquent collectors. These are established on a case-by-case basis. If you are delinquent, please contact our office at (757) 253-6705.
Can I set up an automatic deduction for taxes? Our Easy Pay program allows people to automatically pay taxes monthly or semi-annually.
How do I make out my check? Please make the check payable to: Treasurer, James City County. You may combine personal property taxes and real estate taxes on one check. Please be sure to include all remittances (the return slip at the bottom).
When are dog tags due and how much are they? Dog tags go on sale November 1 and are due by Jan. 31. The current rate is $5 per year for spayed or neutered dogs and $8.00 per year for male or female dogs. The County currently offers a multi-year dog tag based on the expiration date of the dog’s rabies vaccination.
Can I purchase dump coupons at your office? Dump tickets can be purchased in books of 5 tickets for $20.00 online, at the Treasurer’s Office, the Satellite Office, Freedom Park, and the James City County Recreation Center.
