Voters are required to show ID before voting or sign an Affirmation of Identity before voting. Acceptable forms of ID are:

Virginia Voter Identification Card
Valid Virginia Driver's License
Federal, State, or local Government issued ID
Employer issued photo ID
Social Security Card
Any voter who forgets appropriate ID may still vote by signing an Affirmation of Identity, under oath, stating that he is the voter he claims to be.

Special ID Requirements for Federal Elections Only

In accordance with the Help America Vote Act Of 2002,* any first time voter who registered by mail after January 1, 2003, and did not include an ID with his or her application must provide one of the following types of identification at the polls:

  • Virginia Voter Identification Card
  • Valid Virginia Driver’s License
  • A copy of a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or other document showing name and address.
  • Other IDs may be accepted at the polls. If you are not sure if your ID meets the legal requirements, call us!

If there is no acceptable form of ID, the voter may receive a provisional ballot. These requirements only apply to federal elections.
