The James City County Board of Supervisors and Economic Development Authority recognized the Williamsburg Winery as this year’s recipient of the Captain John Smith Award during the 24th annual Celebration of Business. This award is presented each year by the County’s economic development team to a business, organization or individual for exemplary contributions in the County.
The Williamsburg Winery was founded in 1985 by Patrick and Peggy Duffeler on 300 acres of land in the County. The Williamsburg Winery released its first wine, Governor’s White, in 1988. After nearly three decades, the Williamsburg Winery now has 40 acres of vineyards, an on-site garden, two restaurants and a boutique hotel in addition to their guided tours and event spaces for weddings and special events. The Williamsburg Winery added 9,000 square feet of operational space in the spring of 2017 with the renovation of Westbury Hall from a warehouse.
“The Williamsburg Winery does not fit into a singular industry sector,” said Thomas Tingle, Chairman of the Economic Development Authority. “Their business is part agriculture, part manufacturing, part distribution and part hospitality. We are pleased that on the eve of their 30th anniversary of production that they are the recipient of this award.”
The Williamsburg Winery is one of the largest producers of wine in Virginia, producing 65,000 cases each year of more than 25 different wines. Additionally, the Williamsburg Winery is committed to sustainable practices and is a Virginia Green Winery.
The Celebration of Business is an appreciation event for existing companies in James City County. The event was held on Nov. 2 in the Jamestown Settlement’s Rotunda and Great Hall. Previous winners of the Captain John Smith award include Anheuser-Busch, Busch Gardens Williamsburg, Coresix Precision Glass, La Tienda and Kingsmill Resort.
