[ARCHIVED] Cooling centers and assistance applications available


Continued high temperatures are expected in the area this week. Need a place to cool off? Citizens and visitors can go to the JCC Recreation Center, 5301 Longhill Rd. during normal operating hours: Monday-Thursday 6 a.m.-9 p.m., Friday 6 a.m.-8 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m.-6 p.m., Sunday 1-6 p.m. Call 757-259-4200 for more information.

Citizens and visitors can also go to the Williamsburg Library, 515 Scotland St., or the James City County Library, 7770 Croaker Rd. during normal operating hours: Monday-Thursday 10 a.m.-9 p.m., Friday 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Sunday 1-5 p.m. Call 757-259-7770 for more information.

In addition, James City County's Department of Social Services is now accepting cooling assistance applications. The program provides purchase or repair of cooling equipment and/or payment for electricity to operate cooling equipment. To be eligible, a household must contain at least one vulnerable individual who is age 60 or over, disabled or under age 6. Assistance is based on the availability of funds and the deadline to apply is Aug. 17. Residents can apply thru or complete a paper application at James City County Department of Social Services, 5249 Olde Towne Rd., Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. For more information, call 757-259-3100.
