James City County Fire Department, along with James City-Bruton Volunteer Fire Department and York County Fire and Life Safety, responded to a 911 call reporting several canoes in distress in the York River off Croaker Landing, shortly before noon on April 12.
Upon arrival, the crews found a group of 11 people in several canoes, one of which had capsized, stranding two people in the water. All were wearing life jackets, and the two in the water were successfully rescued. Several of the canoes required assistance to get back to shore due to the wind, while others were able to make it to shore on their own. Crews rescued a total of seven people, including the two who had capsized. One person was transported by ambulance to Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center due to concerns about exposure to the elements, and is reported to be in good condition.
