Just after 9 p.m. on April 21, firefighters from the James City-Bruton Volunteer Fire Department and James City County Fire Department were dispatched to a 911 report of fire in the Colonial Town Plaza Shopping Center. When units arrived they found heavy fire in the Brass Shop spreading to other stores. Several people were assisted out of the building, as flames broke through the roof. The roof collapsed after several minutes, causing significant damage to several stores including a dentist office and hair salon. There were no injuries, and the James City County Fire Marshal is investigating. There is no determination of the cause at this time.
