Emergency dispatchers received a 911 report of a home fully engulfed by flames shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday, April 22. Crews from the James City-Bruton Volunteer Fire Department and James City County Fire Department had been working a commercial fire at the nearby Colonial Town Plaza shopping center when the fire in the 200 block of Reflection Drive in the Mirror Lakes subdivision occurred.
The family of four and a guest had used a fire pit on the home's deck. After extinguishing the fire pit and retiring for the night, the occupants awoke several hours later to discover flames on the deck and rear of the home. Fire crews responded and arrived within five minutes; however, extensive fire had already engulfed the home, with the roof eventually collapsing. There were no injuries, and the James City County Fire Marshal is investigating. The family is being assisted by the Red Cross.
