Aquatics

 
Learn to Swim, Free Swim Evaluations 
There are individual registration periods before each swim lesson session. Registration for June classes is open May 29-June 8. Registration is accepted at the James City County Recreation Center and online at Aquatics.
Having trouble deciding which swim level is appropriate for your child? Ourcertified Water Safety Instructor will be available 4:30-6:30 p.m. on Tuesday,
May 29 and Wednesday, May 30 to provide free swim evaluations. Classes/evaluationsheld at the James City County Recreation Center. Info: 757-259-4185.

American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Course (ages 15+)
Course held Friday, May 4-Thursday, May 10 at the times listed
below:

Friday, May 4, 4-6 p.m.
Saturday, May 5, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
Monday, May 7-Thursday, May 10, 4-8 p.m.
$210; $205 for JC/W residents (includes swim test, book andmaterials).
Class meets at the James City County Recreation Center on the
first day.

  • Includes First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Must attend and pass a swim test (held first day of class):300-yard continuous swim (100 yards of front crawl, 100 yards of breaststroke
    and 100 yards of choice of front crawl or breaststroke). Retrieve a 10-poundbrick from a depth of 7-8 feet and return 20 yards, keeping both hands on the
    brick at all times; face must remain out of the water. Tread water for two minutes, keeping arms out of the water.
  • Must attend every class to earn certification.
  • Failure to complete competency test does not guarantee a fullrefund.
  • Cell phone use is not permitted in class and can be grounds for
    dismissal.
  • Must be age 15 or older by the last day of class.
  • Classes held at the JCCRC and Eastern State Hospital.

REC Connect
Looking for summer camps or before/after-school programs for your child? The REC Connect program is open to youth ages 5-14, enrolled in grades K-8. One registration packet may be used for both Summer Camp 2018 and the Before- & After-School 2018-19 programs. Registrations accepted on a first-come, first-served basis according to postmark date and space availability. Registration forms and program information is available online and at the Recreation Centers, Freedom Park Interpretive Center and Satellite Services Office in Toano. Weekly registration fees apply. Want to get out of the house, do something fun, active and healthy for yourself and your child AND meet a group of amazing moms in your own town? Get a great 60 minutes of exercise using your own body weight, bands and balls as well as our outdoor walking trail! Class ends at the My Place Playground for your tots to play. R.A.D. Basic Physical Defense (ages 14+) Free!

The R.A.D. system (Rape Aggression Defense) is a program ofrealistic, self-defense tactics and techniques. This comprehensive, 12-hour
course (six days, two hours/day) for women begins with awareness, prevention, riskreduction and avoidance, then progresses on to the basics of hands-on defense

Joint Freeing Yoga Series (ages 14+) Free!

This series of 22 poses completed in 90 minutes is accessible to all. Based on the practices developed by Makunda Stiles, this workshop will work all the major joints gently and systematically through full and natural range of motions to enhance joint mobility and reduce pain and stiffness. The “Arc of Abilities” began in 2016 to support adults withintellectual and developmental disabilities who do not have a Medicaid waiver.
The Day Support Program provides continuing education, life skills andvocational training. In addition, clients are engaged in fitness, recreational

Forest Explorers Walk & Talk (all ages) Free!

Freedom Park
Join us on the first Saturday of every month for a nature programand guided walk on the new Living Forest Interpretive Trail! One of our expert
nature guides will present a nature program on a different topic each month,then lead children and their parents on a trip through the forest to learn
about plants, wildlife, insects and anything else we may encounter! The natureprogram will take place at the Freedom Park Interpretive Center. The walks will
begin at the Freedom Park playground, with a new walk starting every 30minutes. Weather permitting.

early settlers learned to harvest herbs and other plants to serve asmedications. Come learn about how they relied on native plants and forest
plants for many of their

Are you interested in skulls, bones, pellets and scat? Come hearLes Lawrence, a Virginia Master Naturalist, explain how to identify mammals by
their skulls and skeletons. Participants will have a hands-on experience andlearn how

Pedal the Parkway, Free!

Colonial Parkway
The Williamsburg/James City County Biking Community’s signature event has been cruising for more than 21 years! The Colonial Parkway will be closed to vehicles allowing cyclists, runners and walkers to enjoy the ride at their own pace. Helmets required for cyclists. Cap2Cap Ride

Ride starts at the Charles City County Courthouse, 10760Courthouse Road, Charles City, VA 23030
Join over 2,000 riders for an unforgettable day at one of the fastest growing ride events in the region, the Capital to Capital Ride (aka Cap2Cap). Come pedal through 400 years of history between Virginia’s past and present capitals of Richmond, Jamestown and Williamsburg. Bike some of the state’s most stunning scenery – ride options include Century (100 miles), Half Century (50 miles), Quarter Century (25 miles) and a Family Ride (15 miles). Enjoy well-stocked rest stops, lunch, a vendor expo and live entertainment. Cost dependent on age and ride option, ranging from free up to $90/rider.
