There are individual registration periods before each swim lesson session. Registration for June classes is open until June 8. Registration for July classes opens June 26-July 6. Before/After School, Camps

REC Connect
Summer is almost here! Need camp or want to sign up for the fall Before/After School programs? The REC Connect program is open to youth ages 5-14, enrolled in grades K-8. One registration packet may be used for both Summer Camp 2018 and the Before & After School 2018-19 programs. Registrations accepted on a first-come, first-served basis according to postmark date and space availability. Registration forms and program information are available online and at the Recreation Centers, Freedom Park Interpretive Center and Satellite Services Office in Toano. Weekly registration fees apply. Gait Analysis (all ages) Free!

What could be more basic than walking and running? Local sports chiropractor Dr. Daniel Shaye of Performance Chiropractic will be performing FREE gait analysis. You may learn why your knee hurts, or your back, or your hip—you may even catch injuries BEFORE they happen! Please wear shorts and a tank type shirt for the best analysis. Level 1 Yoga: 4-Week Workshop (ages 14+)
Thursdays, June 7-28, 6-7:30 p.m.

This four-week workshop is designed to establish a sustainable practice and is suitable for those who have never practiced before or had a daily home practice. We’ll methodically work through poses to strengthen the body, improve balance, flexibility and confidence, moving on as the class is ready. We’ll learn and progress together. Day Support Program (ages 18+ with disabilities)

The “Arc of Abilities” began in 2016 to support adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities who do not have a Medicaid waiver. The Day Support Program provides continuing education, life skills and vocational training. In addition, clients are engaged in fitness, recreational and community service opportunities with peers, instructors and the community. Monthly tuition based on need. Pitch your tent (or borrow one of ours) and spend the night at Chickahominy Riverfront Park! Learn to set up your tent, build a campfire, and cook in a Dutch oven…then the rest of the day is yours to explore the park! Rent a kayak, take a dip in the pool or check out our new splash pad! Gather around the campfire that evening for s’mores at our campfire social. One registration per family, limit six people per campsite. Campsite fees and pool pass included in registration. Calling all children interested in botanical art! Sally Henderson, an art teacher at Matoaka Elementary School, will have a special art project for you at the Williamsburg Botanical Garden. All materials will be provided, just bring your creativity! Registration is limited to 12 participants; register at Program will meet in the Williamsburg Botanical Garden. A $5 donation to help the garden grow is appreciated.

Kayak historic Powhatan Creek beside Jamestown Island. View and learn about birds and wildlife native to our area. The Art of Gardening with Rocks and Plants (ages 18+)

Freedom Park (meet in the Botanical Garden)
Joseph Tychonievich, the author of “Rock Gardening: Re-imagining a Classic Style,” will inspire you to develop this type of garden in your own yard and appreciate it in other yards. Tychonievich is known as one of the top young horticulturists in the United States. Following the program, Master Gardeners will be available in the Williamsburg Botanical Garden to discuss what’s in bloom. National Trails Day Events
Saturday, June 2: 

  • Trek the Trail (all ages) Free! 9-11 a.m. at Freedom Park. Did you know that the first Saturday in June is National Trails Day? Get out, Get ACTIVE and Discover Freedom Park!  Join us for this self-guided family walk and bring along your furry friend to participate in “Tails on the Trail.” Weather permitting.
  • Tails on the Trail(all ages)  Free! 9-11 a.m. at Freedom Park. Are you up for a trail adventure with your dog? Join us and the Heritage Humane Society for this self-guided adventure which starts off at one of the eight trails open for your exploration throughout the summer. Pets and children must be accompanied by an adult. For more information, visit Don’t have a furry friend? Come out for “Trek the Trail." Weather permitting.
  • Women’s Mountain Bike Ride (ages 18+) Free! 10 a.m.-noon at Freedom Park (meet at the Interpretive Center). Ladies, join the Eastern Virginia Mountain Bike Association’s Dirt Divas on a women’s-only mountain bike ride! Come learn the trail system at Freedom Park, meet fellow female riders in the community and learn the ins-and-outs of mountain biking. The ride will be at a moderate pace and will take about two hours. Bike and helmet required. Water bottles and/or hydration packs encouraged. Future ride dates and times will be posted at; please email for more information. Weather permitting.
  • Beginner’s Mountain Bike Ride (ages 18+) Free! 10 a.m.-noon at Freedom Park (meet at the Interpretive Center). Are you new to mountain biking and looking to ride with a group?  Join one of the Eastern Virginia Mountain Bike Association’s group rides.  EVMA volunteers will offer basic mountain bike instruction and answer your questions. Volunteers will then lead a moderate pace ride, with stops for regrouping. The rides last about 60 minutes. Bike and helmet are required. Appropriate attire and water are recommended. Future ride information will be posted at; please email for more information. Weather permitting.
  • Forest Explorers Walk & Talk (all ages) Free! Join us for a nature program and guided walk on the new Living Forest Interpretive Trail! One of our expert nature guides will present a nature program on bats (9-10 a.m.), then lead children and their parents on a trip through the forest to learn about plants, wildlife, insects and anything else we may encounter! The nature program will take place at the Freedom Park Interpretive Center. The walks (10 a.m.-noon) will begin at the Freedom Park playground, with a new walk starting every 30 minutes. Movie Nights (all ages) Free!

Bring a blanket/pillow and join James City County Parks & Recreation for FREE family friendly movie nights held inside the multipurpose room. Popcorn and drinks provided. Project 547: JCC’s Longest Day of Play, Free!

Celebrate the longest day of the year by joining Parks & Recreation for the Longest Day of Play! On June 21, we cater to the sun and offer recreational activities all day long including extended hours, sport activities, fitness classes, scavenger hunts, and basketball competitions as well as other outdoor programming. The day kicks off at 5:47 a.m. and culminates with a variety of activities including the Jamestown Jams concert series featuring the band The Originals (acoustic singer-songwriter showcase), a sunset paddle and owl prowl. $10 fee for participants
Skate Park (adjacent to the James City County Recreation Center)
Get hyped for this skateboarding and BMX competition. Skateboards, bikes, food, live local music and of course, prizes make this event one not to miss! Participants will be divided into experience categories and judged on style, flow and difficulty of the run. Registration and warm-ups begin at 4:30 p.m. each day. Spectators are free and welcomed. Join Williamsburg native Dylan Pritchett, best known as ‘The Storyteller,’ along with other Virginia Black Storytellers (VirBS) as they share with you Freedom Stories at Freedom Park! The Free Black Settlement area is the backdrop for this special event. Also featured are unique crafts for kids, music and food available for purchase. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Spencer’s Ordinary Ceremony & Presentation (all ages) Free!
Tuesday, June 26, 10 a.m.
Freedom Park & Interpretive Center
James City County Parks & Recreation and the Williamsburg Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution will conduct a wreath laying memorial service on June 26 in honor of the valiant Americans who gave their lives in the Battle of Spencer’s Ordinary on that date in 1781. A series of skirmishes occurred in the woods and meadows of Freedom Park between the units of Lord Cornwallis and those of the French general, Marquis de Lafayette. Immediately following the wreath ceremony, join us in the Freedom Park Interpretive Center and discover the realities of Revolutionary War combat! Chris Bonin, historian and author, will examine the action at Spencer’s Ordinary through detailed drawings and first-hand accounts of the men who fought on both sides of the battle.
