Need Help with Cooling this Summer?

As the days heat up, it becomes more important to keep homes cool and comfortable. The Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Social Services offers an Energy Assistance Program to eligible citizens, which includes Cooling Assistance.

Cooling Assistance helps with cooling equipment repairs or purchases and with payment of the electric bill to operate cooling equipment. To be eligible, you must be in need of cooling equipment, and the household must include an elderly person, a disabled person, or a child under six. Services are available June 15-Aug. 15.

All benefits are based on availability of funds. In order to be eligible, certain citizenship criteria must be met and a household's monthly income must be less than the maximum allowed for the number of people in the home (see "Am I Eligible?" on the Virginia CommonHelp website) .

You can access applications online, by calling the Enterprise Customer Service Center at 855-635-4370, or by visiting your local department of social services. (The James City County Department of Social Services is located at 5249 Olde Towne Road, Williamsburg, VA 23188.)
