[ARCHIVED] Treasurer’s Office Contracts with Virginia Auction Company

Door to Tresurer and Commissioner of the Revenue

The James City County Treasurer’s Office has recently contracted with Virginia Auction Company to assist with the collection of delinquent personal property taxes. Va. Auction Company works with local governments using license plate readers to locate vehicles associated with delinquent taxes.

Vehicles outfitted with cameras (plate readers) and laptops will be used to locate vehicles in parking lots, on County streets and in residential areas. As vehicles associated with delinquent taxes are located, VA. Auction Company staff members will affix a 72-hour non-restraining seizure warrant to the vehicle. Once the seizure warrant has been served, additional collection fees will be assessed to the delinquent account(s). The taxpayer will have 72 hours to contact the Treasurer’s Office for payment before further action, including but not limited to, seizing and selling the vehicle.

Payment agreements may be available if the taxpayer meets certain criteria and has not defaulted on a prior payment plan. Taxpayers with any questions or concerns, should contact the Treasurer’s Office at 757-253-6705.
