LATEST INFORMATION
County officials continue to monitor Hurricane Florence and are making needed preparations.

In response to the problems the Know Your Zone website experienced on Sept. 10, the County has set up a unique link for zone information. www.jamescitycountyva.gov/knowyourzone

Cancellations and Closings
The Economic Development Authority (EDA) has canceled their Sept. 13 meeting. The next meeting will be a joint work session with the Board of Supervisors on Tuesday, Sept. 25 from 4-7 p.m.

Finger printing services will not be available on Friday, Sept. 14 at the Law Enforcement Center.

The Firearm Safety Course scheduled for Sept. 15 has been canceled.

Jamestown-Scotland Ferry service suspended starting Wednesday at 10 a.m. until further notice.

The Neighborhood Forum previously scheduled for Sept. 12 has been canceled.

The Chesapeake Bay and Wetlands Meeting scheduled for Sept. 12 has been postponed until the Oct. 10 meeting.

Harvest Festival scheduled for Sept. 15 has been canceled. It will not be rescheduled.


Prepare Your Home
To prepare your home, Bring loose, lightweight objects inside that could become projectiles in high winds such as patio furniture, garbage cans. Anchor objects that would be unsafe to bring inside such as propane tanks and trim or remove trees close enough to fall on the building.

Clear loose and clogged rain gutters and downspouts to prevent flooding and unnecessary pressure on awnings.

Check on your neighbors, especially the elderly and those without access to the Internet.

All commercial building owners are encouraged to inspect (flat and low slope) roof drains and to make sure they are clear. Obstructed roof drains, both primary and overflow, could lead to significant structural damage.

With the arrival of tropical storm force winds and heavy rains beginning Wednesday and continuing through the weekend, Virginians can expect widespread road closures and power outages. Motorists should visit 511Virginia.org or Call 511 for the latest road conditions.

GENERAL AND BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Following the Governor’s Emergency Declaration, James City County declared a local state of emergency at 2:51 p.m. on Sept. 10. The declaration is a precautionary move in the event it becomes necessary for the County to take further action.

Governor Northam has ordered the coastal evacuation of Zone A, the lowest-lying areas of coastal Virginia, Hampton Roads and the Eastern Shore, effective 8 a.m. Sept. 11. Jamestown Island is the only part of James City County in Zone A.

VDOT crews are clearing drainage structures in advance of the storm and will have crews and personnel available 24/7 to respond to damaged roadways and downed trees.

Shelters

County officials anticipate opening shelters. Information about shelters will be available through JCC Alert, social media and local media as it becomes available.

Residents who feel unsafe in their homes should first try to stay with friends or family before resorting to a shelter.

If shelters are opened, one will be pet-friendly. Pets must be inside crates or carriers.
