Applications are now being accepted for ChefsGO 1.0, a culinary kickstart program that provides 11 weeks of classroom and hands-on kitchen training, taught by local professional chefs in partnership with Thomas Nelson Community College. Labs and lectures are interactive and intensive, equipping students with foundational culinary techniques and knowledge. Following the classroom learning, students take part in a 15-week full-time paid mentorship with one of the participating chef instructors. This is a unique opportunity for individuals interested in stepping into the restaurant, commercial and non-commercial food service industries.Applicants must attend a mandatory information session about the program on Monday, Oct. 22 or Monday, Nov. 5 at the TNCC Workforce Center, 4135 Ironbound Road, Williamsburg, VA 23188. Sessions will be held from 3:30-5 p.m. and 6:30-8 p.m. Applications will be screened and interviews will be scheduled with notification of acceptance in December. The next program begins March 2019.Students will be introduced to everything from knife skills to preparing sauces and soups, proper kitchen sanitation to food storage and much more. Applicants are not required to have cooking skills or restaurant experience, but should review the technical requirements prior to applying. Applications are available online and are due on Friday, Nov. 9. This program is open to any Peninsula resident, although students must be 18 by Sept.1, 2019 to participate.
