[ARCHIVED] County Receives Grant to Reduce Erosion at Chickahominy Riverfront Park

Erosion at Chickahominy Riverfront Park

Erosion at the shoreline of Chickahominy Riverfront Park will soon be reduced thanks to a $781,900 grant from the Virginia Environmental Endowment (VEE).

James City County staff applied for the grant to help fund solutions to severe erosion at the Park that contributes thousands of pounds of sediment to the James River each year. The County will match VEE funds and build a “living shoreline” along portions of the Park that border both the Chickahominy River and Gordon Creek, regrading and stabilizing steep slopes, constructing offshore breakwaters and creating new marshland habitats, all of which will thereby reducing sediment pollution to the river from erosion.

VEE received 25 proposals for the James River Water Quality Improvement Program Grant Awards totaling nearly $40 million. Six projects totaling over $4.5 million were selected. For more information about VEE, visit their website.
