Aquatics

Learn to Swim, Free Swim Evaluations
Registration is open Dec. 11-21 for January swim classes. Registration is accepted at the James City County Recreation Center and online. Having trouble deciding which swim level is appropriate for your child? Our certified Water Safety Instructor will be available 4:30-6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 18 and Wednesday, Dec. 19 to provide free swim evaluations. Classes/evaluations held at the James City County Recreation Center. Info: 757-259-4185.

Arts/Special Interest 

Kid’s Gingerbread House Workshop (ages 7-13)
Friday, Dec.14, 5-7 p.m.
$25; $20 for JC/W residents

Construct and decorate your own gingerbread house! Supplies provided. These wonderful treats are perfect as centerpieces for the holidays. Please note any food allergies at the time of registration. All treats made during class are taken home. Note: Please tie back long hair and bring an apron. 212101-B


Before/After School, Camps

REC Connect
The REC Connect program offers a before/after school program for youth ages 5-14, enrolled in grades K-8. One registration packet may be used for both the Before & After School 2018-2019  and Summer Camp 2019 programs. Registrations accepted on a first-come, first-served basis according to postmark date and space availability. Registration forms and program information is available online and at the Recreation Centers, Freedom Park Interpretive Center and Satellite Services Office in Toano. Weekly registration fees apply. Discounts are available to any qualified resident based on total household gross income; please call 757-259-5414 for financial details.

Teen Program (ages 10-14)

Sessions held daily, 7 a.m.-6 p.m. Cost is $35/day; $30 for JC/W residents. Enjoy winter break with fun trips and activities. Each day begins and ends at the James City County. Bring lunch daily. Therapeutic Recreation Program 

Days of Discovery Winter Break Program (ages 5-22 with disabilities)
Wednesday-Friday, Dec. 26-28, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

$80; $75 for JC/W residents

Experience FUN, arts and crafts, gym games and much more! A typical participant:

  • Has a mild to moderate disability
  • Can independently or with verbal cues, feed, bathe and toilet
  • Is able to function successfully within a 1:3 staff to camper ratio
  • Is able to adjust to changes in routine/environment with relative ease
  • Has the ability to effectively communicate needs either verbally or with a communication device.

Why not play sports when school’s out? Kick it at the Recreation Center for this holiday sports sampler camp! Try out traditional and non-traditional sports including soccer, pickleball, badminton, football and more! Swim time included during this camp. One on One Winter Break Basketball Camp (ages 6-14) New!

Lace up your basketball shoes for this holiday basketball camp. This camp is taught through One on One Basketball, a nationwide program that caters to players of all ages and skill levels. Their philosophy is based on the belief that focused training is the best means through which a player can achieve significant and lasting improvement on the basketball court. Kids Storybook Yoga (ages 4-7)
Thursdays, 5-5:30 p.m.

This 30-minute class offers your child a fun way to bring together imagination, creativity and movement! While interacting with the book’s characters and plot, Storybook Yoga helps children contemplate meaningful messages such as gratitude, peace, self-love, respect and confidence. Youth Yoga (ages 8-13)

Joint Freeing Yoga Series (ages 14+)
Thursday, Dec.5, 6-7:30 p.m.

This series of 22 poses completed in 90 minutes is accessible to all. Based on the practices developed by Makunda Stiles, this workshop will work all the major joints gently and systematically through full and natural range of motions to enhance joint mobility and reduce pain and stiffness. Diabetes Risk Assessment Screening & Blood Pressure Check (all ages) Free!

Are you at risk for Type 2 Diabetes? Stop by to take the American Diabetes Association Diabetes Risk paper test and discuss your results with an RN. Holiday Shopping Spree

Abram Frink Jr. Community Center
The “Arc of Abilities” began in 2016 to support adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities who do not have a Medicaid waiver. The Day Support Program provides continuing education, life skills and vocational training. In addition, clients are engaged in fitness, recreational and community service opportunities with peers, instructors and the community. Monthly tuition based on need. Outdoor and Nature Programs

Holiday Ornaments from Nature (all ages) Free! New!
Saturday, Dec. 15, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Freedom Park Interpretive Center
Want to transform acorns, sweetgum balls and pine cones into adorable ornaments?! Bring billfold size school photos if you’d like to make a surprise for Grandma or a memorable ornament for your tree. Drop in anytime between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. and spend an hour or so, then head home with some new tree ornaments! All materials provided. 


Special Events

Movie Nights: How the Grinch Stole Christmas (PG, 2000) Free!
Friday, Dec. 7, 6-8 p.m.
Abram Frink Jr. Community Center
Bring a blanket/pillow and join us for family friendly movie nights held inside the multipurpose room.  Popcorn and drinks provided. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.  Stop by the front desk for a schedule of movies offered the first Friday of every month. Movies subject to change.


Gaming

Teen Tournaments (boys and girls ages 12-19) Free!
Thursdays, 4-6 p.m.

Come out for weekly Xbox game tournaments and competitive active game tournaments. These safe, free and fun nights challenge you to play in competitive tournaments against other gamers in your age group. For information, call 757-887-5810.
