Due to the Presidential Proclamation made making Dec. 5, 2018 a special day of mourning in remembrance of former President George H. W. Bush, the personal property and real estate tax due date will be extended to Dec. 6, 2018. Any payments made on or before Dec. 6, 2018 (postmarked included), will be considered paid on time.
Additionally, there have been questions raised in reference to tax payments being mailed to Boston, MA. In 2015, the James City County Treasurer’s office began using lockbox services as a way to process a large volume of tax payments more efficiently. From 2016 through June 2018, payments were mailed to the lockbox facility for SunTrust Bank in Baltimore, MD. The Treasurer recently contracted with Towne Bank to provide these services, changing the mailing address to Towne Bank’s service center in Boston, MA.
As a steward of James City County taxpayer monies, the Treasurer continually looks for opportunities to use the County’s funds and other resources as effectively and efficiently as possible. Using a lockbox service allows for a much more efficient depositing process for tax payments. It provides a faster method of posting payments to tax accounts, and means that Treasurer’s Office staff are not diverted from other critical duties during peak payment times. Additionally, by using this service, Treasurer’s Office staff members are better able to assist citizens in person and by telephone regarding their tax accounts.
