[ARCHIVED] Police Recognized for National Night Out

National Night Out 2018 award

James City County Police Department was recently recognized by the National Association of Town Watch for its outstanding participation in 2018 National Night Out. The Department was ranked 27 out of 139 applying jurisdictions of the same size (populations of 50,000-100,000).

National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live. National Night Out enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community. Furthermore, it provides a great opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances.

Each year, the Department breaks up into teams including officers from JCCPD, personnel from James City County Fire Department and Williamsburg-James City County Sheriff’s Office and volunteers visiting neighborhoods throughout the County on the first Tuesday each August. Each neighborhood celebrates in their own way. Some neighborhoods host block parties, cookouts, ice cream socials and more.

In 2018, Senior Police Officer (SPO) Shenee Graham spearheaded National Night Out in the County. Teams, including McGruff the Crime Dog, visited more than 25 neighborhoods in the County. SPO Graham also coordinated filming and photography throughout the night by the County’s Video Center staff.

The Department would like to thank all of the participating neighborhoods that make this annual event so successful!
