Great Outdoors Month

June is Great Outdoors Month and to celebrate here are five of the best outdoor activities for kids in James City County.

A night filled with a campfire, fresh air and s’mores is the perfect way to kickoff summer! Camping is available at Chickahominy Riverfront Park and makes the perfect getaway for a night or two. Chickahominy Riverfront Park has many amenities and has great views of both sunrises and sunsets.

James City County has a variety of locations to fish. There are locations for pier fishing, bank fishing and boat fishing. Fishing is fun for the whole familyand reminiscent of simpler times.

Swing from the trees at Go Ape’s treetop adventure courses in the County (located at Freedom Park) that include zip lines, obstacles and more. Treetop Journey takes approximately one hour to complete and a minimum height requirement of 3’3” must be met for all participants. Supervision is required and reservations are recommended.

Depending on the level of adventure your kids have, take them hiking or biking at a new place. Some suggestions for biking: Historic Jamestowne Island Loop, Virginia Capital Trail and Freedom Park. For hiking, there are a variety of trails available at both York River State Park and Freedom Park.

York River State Park is a great state park located in James City County. There are a variety of ranger-led and guided programs available. These activities vary based on the day, but there are at least two to choose from each weekend.

No matter what outdoor activities you pick, creating memories outside in June will be fun for your whole family.
