James City County recently completed the replacement of seven synthetic turf athletic fields at the Warhill Sports Complex located at 4900 Stadium Road. After 11 years of regular use by football, soccer, field hockey and lacrosse teams, the original fields had reached the end of their life cycle and were subject to replacement as part of the County’s approved maintenance plan. The new fields not only improve the look and feel of the facility, they increase the safety and play ability for the athletes. The installation of the 600,000 square feet of artificial turf took six months to complete and came in on time and on budget. The County was able to recycle over 3 million pounds of infill which saved $145,000 bringing the final cost to $2,895,738. County staff produced a video with time lapse footage throughout the project. In addition, 9,000 square feet of wildflower beds were planted on the slopes leading up to Wanner Stadium from the artificial fields helping to reduce erosion and increase the pollinator population. The fields are used by local athletes seven days a week for 10 months each year. Furthermore, players and families come to the Warhill Sports Complex to participate in 30 tournaments per year resulting in increased business for local restaurants, lodging and shopping.Media Contact:Grace Boone, General Services Director757-259-4082; email@example.com
