According to the 2020 Identity Fraud Study released by Javelin Strategy & Research, identity fraud reached $16.9 billion in 2019 - more than a $2 billion increase from 2018. One of the most successful ways of preventing identity theft is by shredding documents that contain personal information that thieves use.Join James City County Police Department for a Shred-A-Thon on Aug. 29 at the Williamsburg/James City County Courthouse at 5201 Monticello Avenue, Williamsburg, 8:30–11:30 a.m.The first grocery bag of documents will be shredded at no charge and each additional bag is $5. Citizens are invited to bring up to 10 paper or plastic grocery bags or 5 file boxes of personal documents to be shredded. Computer disks, binders, laminated paper and other non-paper materials should be removed from boxes prior to the event. Staples, rubber bands and paper clips do not need to be removed.This event will be set up like a drive through. In order to maintain safety, attendees are asked to remain inside of their vehicles. Prior to your arrival, please place bags/documents in an area in your vehicle easily accessible to officers who will be removing them from your vehicle. Officers will be wearing masks. If you are not feeling well or experiencing any symptoms that may be attributed to COVID-19, please stay home.Please note that we are unable to accommodate business shredding.Only cash (please bring small bills) and checks (made out to James City County Treasurer) will be accepted. We are unable to accept credit cards.Proceeds from the Shred-A-Thon will support the Department’s annual Shop with a Cop event and other community outreach and crime prevention programs. Shop with a Cop is a program assisting underprivileged children and families during the holidays in James City County.
