Lifeguard Training
American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Course • Ages 15+
Friday, Nov. 6, 4-6 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 7, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and Monday-Thursday, Nov. 9-12, 4-9 p.m.
$205/includes swim test, book and materials
James City County Recreation Center and Kingswood Pool (111 Spring Road)
• Includes First Aid and CPR certification
• Must attend and pass a swim test (300-yard continuous swim: 100 yards of front crawl, 100 yards of breaststroke and 100 yards of choice of front crawl or breaststroke). Retrieve a 10-pound brick from a depth of 7-8 feet and return 20 yards, keeping both hands on the brick at all times; face must remain out of the water. Tread water for two minutes keeping arms out of the water.
• Must attend every class to earn certification
• Failure to complete competency test does not guarantee a full refund
• Cell phone use is not permitted in class and can be grounds for dismissal
• Must be age 15 or older by the last day of class
• Class meets at the JCCRC on the first day

Renew your Lifeguarding and CPR/AED for professional rescuers certifications
• Must successfully complete the prerequisite skills, practical skills, first aid skills and written tests
• Failure to complete all requirements does not guarantee a full refund

Arts & Special Interest

Genealogy for Kids • Ages 7-12 NEW! FREE!
Tuesday, Nov. 10-Dec. 15, 4:30-5:15 p.m.
Register by Nov. 4; Zoom Meeting
Children love listening to stories from parents, grandparents and extended family about the wonderful people and events from the past. Let’s transform your children into genetic detectives with weekly family history lessons and activities. Sharing family history is invaluable to a young person’s sense of self. Register by Wednesday, Nov. 4 to receive the Zoom meeting link. Instructor: Paula Guerra.

Before/After School - REC Connect
Williamsburg/James City County (WJCC) Public Schools have moved to Path 2 of the Return to Learn: Forward WJCC Schools. Students in grades K-3 returned to the classroom two days a week for in-person learning and grades 4-5 remain in remote learning. In response, REC Connect is operating three consolidated REC Connect sites – Matoaka, Norge, and new, James River Elementary School. Laurel Lane is no longer available due to space. Offerings include full day and before and after care options.  The programs operate Monday-Friday, 7 a.m.- 6 p.m. for grades K-5. Daily programming includes arts & crafts, gym/physical activity, games, outdoor play, healthy snack making and virtual learning time. Due to low registration numbers, the Middle School Teens On Point (T.O.P) program is not operating at this time.


Kids Yoga in the Park • Ages 5-8

Veterans Park
This 30-minute class offers your child a fun way to bring together imagination, creativity and movement! Yoga and nature go hand in hand. This socially distanced yoga class helps children contemplate meaningful messages such as gratitude, peace, self-love, respect and confidence. Your child will enjoy the many benefits of practicing yoga and mindfulness while experiencing the beautiful outdoors. YoKid certified instructor. Monthly four-week sessions. Try first class for free! Outdoor Youth Yoga • Ages 9-13

Veterans Park
A perfect complement to any athletic endeavor or a wonderful opportunity to plug-in to one’s self (or unplug) for just a few minutes in the breeze of the outdoors. These 45-minutes of strong and wonderful yoga flow under the trees will rejuvenate even the most stressed-out teen. Beginner-friendly, your child will learn techniques for relaxation, health and self-love in this rapidly changing world. Youth yoga increases strength and flexibility while helping them unwind, calm down, reduce stress and sleep better. YoKid certified instructor. Monthly four-week sessions. Try first class for free! Group Fitness Classes • Ages 14+
Our instructors are certified by nationally recognized organizations such as AFAA, ACE, Spinning, Zumba, Barre, SilverSneakers®, Yoga Alliance and SCOTT Pilates. Purchase a Premier Pass, Group Fitness Monthly Pass or a 10-Tab Pass for access to classes. These allow you to take any land or aqua fitness class as long as space is available (first-come, first-served). Classes are 50 minutes unless otherwise noted. Our varied schedule includes core and flexibility classes like Pilates, Yoga and PiYo. For a full body workout, we offer Low Impact, Body Sculpt, Cardio Intervals and Indoor Rowing. For more of a physical challenge, try Cardio Kickboxing, Tabata, Kettlebell, Barre, TRX, Bootcamp, Circuit Training or Indoor Cycling. Let us do the programming for you! Gait Analysis • Ages 10+ FREE!
Saturday, Nov. 7, 10 a.m.-noon

What could be more basic than walking and running? Local sports chiropractor Dr. Daniel Shaye of Performance Chiropractic will be performing FREE gait analysis. You may learn why your knee hurts, or your back, or your hip – you may even catch injuries before they happen! Please wear shorts and a tank type shirt for the best analysis. Sound Wellness Workshop • Ages 14+
Monday, Nov. 9, 6-7 p.m.
Freedom Park
This workshop uses the drum and the voice as a modality to practice mindfulness. Students will learn basic drumming and meditation techniques, and participate in drum circles and sound immersions to experience the use of drums and sound in ritual, ceremony and recreation. No musical experience necessary! All instruments provided.

Techniques of Meditation • Ages 16+ FREE!

Whether you’re a seasoned practitioner or brand new, all are welcomed to this open community meditation practice. We’ll explore different styles of meditation techniques as well as tools that aid the meditative process. You’ll be guided in and out of each session. Meditation can improve your physical, emotional and mental health and well-being.

Outdoors Programs & Activities

High Bridge Trail State Park Bike Tour • Ages 12+; 16 & younger must be accompanied by adult
Friday, Nov. 13, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
James City County Recreation Center
Join us for a tour of High Bridge Trail, beginning in Farmville during the height of Virginia’s beautiful fall foliage! Trip fee includes a three hour trail cruiser rental from a local bike shop. Patrons are encouraged to explore as much or as little of the trail as they’d like in that timeframe. Round trip distance to High Bridge and back is just under 10 miles. Preregistration is required at least one week in advance of trip date. Trips are first-come, first-served. Fee also includes transportation to and from trip destination and all park admissions, amenities and excursion fees, unless otherwise noted. This is the final in a series of fall tours which highlight a unique activity, excursion or program specific to the featured park. Patrons are encouraged to bring a bagged lunch and any extra snacks and drinks that may be needed throughout the day. Meet in the James City County Recreation Center lobby at 8 a.m. Full trip details are available by contacting or 757-259-5355. Moderate intensity.

Geocaching 101 • All Ages/Families
$20 minimum or $5/person for groups of 5+
Would you or your group like to learn the basics of geocaching? Learn about the world’s largest outdoor treasure hunt in a fun and unique setting. We’ll explore Williamsburg’s best geocache hot spots and learn the basics of how to create your own. Program fee is $20 minimum or $5/person for groups of five or more. Live Well Week • Ages 55+ NEW! FREE!
Monday-Friday, Nov. 2-6 (no program Nov. 3), 8-10 a.m.
James City County Recreation Center
Seniors ages 55+, we invite you to join us for Live Well Week! Swing by the James City County Recreation Center any day between 8-10 a.m. to pick-up a “Live Well” bag containing information from local organizations and agencies who specialize in health care, nutrition, leisure services and more! Enter our raffle to win a special “Live Well” gift basket with lots of goodies! Flu shots will also be available on Friday, Nov. 6; however, you must sign up by calling 757-259-5353 or register online at During your appointment and throughout your visit at the Recreation Center, facial coverings are required and social distancing measures will be in place.
