Below is a sampling of our September activities for the entire family! Look for the complete list of activities in the Fall 2016/Winter 2017 Parks and Recreation Activity Brochure. The brochure will be available Sept. 7 and copies can be picked up at all parks and recreation facilities, all public County government offices, the James City County and Williamsburg libraries or downloaded from jamescitycountyva.gov/recreation.

Classes

Play & Learn Story Time (PALS) (ages 3-5)
Fridays, Sept. 2 and Sept. 16, 10-11 a.m.
Grove Christian Outreach Center, 8800 Pocahontas Trail
Offered in collaboration with the Preschool Literacy Project! FREE for families with preschoolers who live in the Grove area! Come with your preschooler and enjoy story time with volunteers who will read fantastic books, explore the pictures and words in the books, sing and move to music and engage in games and hands-on activities related to the book. Take home free books and snacks! Instructors are retired teachers, librarians and caring adults. 910002-D

Kidz Clay (ages 9-15)
Mondays, Sept. 12-Oct. 17 (no class 10/10), 4-5 p.m.
45; $40 for JC/W residents

Make a mess, make some art, and make your mark… in clay! We’ll work on the potter’s wheel as well as hand build sculptural and functional pieces. Finished work is dishwasher and microwave safe. No experience needed. Class may be repeated. $15 materials fee due to instructor at first class. Work will be available for pick up after firing. Dress for mess! Oil Painting (ages 16+)

Turn raw clay into finished forms. Both hand building and the potter’s wheel explored. Appropriate for students of any experience level. $20 due to instructor during first class for one bag of clay and glazes. Additional clay is $20/bag. Instructors: Beth Turbeville or Elizabeth Krome.

Busy Bodies – Toddler Fitness Fun (ages 3-5)

R.A.D. Basic Physical Defense (ages 14+), Free!
Tuesdays & Thursdays, Sept. 20, 22, 27, 29, 6:30-8:30 p.m.
and Saturdays, Sept. 24 & Oct. 1, 9-11 a.m.

The R.A.D. system (Rape Aggression Defense) is a program of realistic, self-defense tactics and techniques. It’s a comprehensive, 12-hour course (6 days, 2 hours/day) for women that begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and avoidance, while progressing on to the basics of hands-on defense training. R.A.D. is not a martial arts program. Classes are taught by certified R.A.D. instructors with the James City County Police Department. 308210-A

Fit Mama-Stroller Fit (all ages)
Tuesdays/Thursdays, 9:30-10:30 a.m.

Want to get out of the house, do something fun, active and healthy for yourself and your child AND meet a group of amazing moms in your own town?! Get a great 60 minutes of exercise using your own body weight, bands and balls as well as our outdoor walking trail! Class ends at the My Place Playground for your tots to play. Pre and postnatal workout for all levels. Jogging stroller not necessary. Bring water and a yoga mat or towel.

Inclusion/Therapeutic Recreation

Yoga (ages 13+ with disabilities)
Tuesday, Sept. 27, 7-9 p.m.

Move through a series of postures to allow the body to become flexible and healthy in a state of deep relaxation. Offered in partnership with The Arc of Greater Williamsburg. For more information on Arc events or to become a member call 757-229-3535 or visit thearcgw.org.

Outdoor Programs

Learn to Row Day (ages 13+), Free!
Saturday, Sept. 10, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
Chickahominy Riverfront Park
Learn the basics of rowing and then get out on the water for a row in a sleek racing shell along Gordon Creek. Multiple rowing sessions held throughout the day. Six participants per session; each session lasts about two hours. Instruction provided by the Williamsburg Boat Club. Email williamsburgboatclub@gmail.com to reserve a spot or for more information.

Interpretive Paddles (ages 18+), Free!
Tuesday, Sept. 6, 6-8 p.m.
James City County Marina
Kayak historic Powhatan Creek and Jamestown Island. View birds and wildlife native to our area. Bring your own kayak or rent one of ours. Guided by James River Association. 16 participants maximum. To register: jrava.org. For information, email Jamie Brunkow at jbrunkow@irava.org

Worms & Their Uses (ages 18+)
Saturday, Sept. 17, 10-11:30 a.m.
Freedom Park Interpretive Center
Local worm farmer, Ron Crum, will tell you all you need to know about raising worms. He has over 400,000 worms in his worm farms and is eager to share his knowledge with you. Free; however a $5 donation is suggested.

Adults in Archaeology! (ages 18+)
Saturday, Sept. 24, 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m.
$25; $20 for JC/W residents
Jamestown Beach Event Park
Remember watching Indiana Jones and wanting to be an archaeologist? Come out and join in the action at an active dig site with local archaeologists. Learn about the site, how to dig and identify, then jump in and get dirty! Bring a sack lunch and refillable water bottle. 809260-A

Drool in the Pool
Saturday, Sept. 10, 9 a.m.-1 p.m.
$10/dog
Chickahominy Riverfront Park
This popular dog swim day is eagerly anticipated each year! Pool passes for your dog will be available at the gate. Music, refreshments and goodies featured! All proceeds benefit the animals of Heritage Humane Society. For more details, visit heritagehumanesociety.org.

Harvest Festival & Scarecrow Stuffing
Saturday, Sept. 17, 11 a.m.-4 p.m.
Chickahominy Riverfront Park
Admission: $5/car (cash or check only)
$20/scarecrow (includes all supplies)
Join James City County Parks and Recreation for the annual Harvest Festival & Scarecrow Stuffing event. Come enjoy the sights and activities including carnival games, inflatables, petting zoo, hayride, rock wall, the trackless train, art and crafts, food and craft vendors plus make the biggest and the best scarecrow in your neighborhood! First come, first served while supplies last. Cash/checks only on site. Don’t forget your camera!

Warhill Sports Complex
Register by Sept. 9. Offering recreational soccer with a focus on fun, league play culminates in an end of season tournament to decide the champion. Register your team under the Captain’s name.
